Description
External stimuli, damage or stress from physiological insults, reactive oxidative species (ROS), radiation, and nutrient deprivation can activate multi-step intracellular signalling cascades that lead to epigenomic modifications or genomic damage. In turn, the genomic instability leads to irreversible cell cycle arrest, metabolic changes, lysosomal accumulation, chromatin remodelling, and a proinflammatory secretome, otherwise known as the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP).
